We know that not everyone is suited to following full-time education which is why the Apprenticeship Programme is available for young people (between the ages of 16 and 24) who are looking to work whilst training at the same time.
For us, our Scheme is a great opportunity to bring more young people into the Council and with them, new and fresh ideas that can benefit the service we provide.
For you, this Scheme is an important stepping-stone if you’re keen on a career working with the Council. It’s a chance to get the kind of real experience and genuine support that can help you decide exactly where you want to go next.
By employing you under the Apprenticeship Scheme, we want you (and us) to benefit from the skills, experience and qualification you have gained. Indeed, we’ll do everything we can to help you to develop your career with us – providing you have shown the kind of commitment and enthusiasm we’re looking for.
Like all our Apprentices, you’ll be paid £80 per week during the first 3 months of employment. Provided that you are working towards reaching the standard required for the job you will receive an increase in pay at 6, 9 and 12 months into the scheme. The scheme will last for a duration of 12 months and on completion of the programme, as long as there is a suitable post available, you’ll move on to the rate for the job. You will be expected to have regular review sessions with your manager, in exceptional cases and when it is agreed at the relevant review session, you will be entitled to move onto the rate for the job if you are competent in the role.
You’ll also enjoy exactly the same holiday entitlement and sickness benefits as other NYCC employees. In fact, although you are on a trainee scheme, we give you full employment status. That’s because we expect you, over a period of time, to make a significant contribution to the service the Council provides at your placements.
Your placement will provide you with a wide range of learning and development opportunities, the kind that can really enhance your skills. And whilst on the Scheme, we’ll also expect you to be committed to undertaking and completing a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
If you have the ambition, we have great opportunities throughout the County in a huge variety of areas. Take a look. This could be the first step on a really successful career ladder.
